The Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Info Know-how, and Authorities Innovation is conducting oversight of company practices and the roles of federal companies that will affect shopper security. Current reporting has highlighted that Uber receives a “report of sexual assault or sexual misconduct in the USA virtually each eight minutes.”1 Particularly, information protection states that “from 2017 to 2022, a complete of 400,181 Uber journeys resulted in stories of sexual assault and sexual misconduct in the USA,” a quantity considerably increased than the 12,552 instances beforehand disclosed by Uber.²
This reporting and the prevalence of incidents raises questions on how Uber identifies, responds to, and discloses incidents of sexual assault and sexual misconduct on its platform. The disparity between beforehand disclosed information and up to date reporting raises issues concerning the accuracy and completeness of security information.³ The Subcommittee is especially involved that underreporting or delayed disclosure of such incidents may hinder policymakers, regulation enforcement, and the general public from totally understanding the scope of the issue and making knowledgeable choices.
This concern will not be new. Sami’s Legislation, enacted in January 2023, required the U.S. Authorities Accountability Workplace (GAO) to conduct a examine on the security steps taken by ridesharing corporations associated to rider and driver security.
